Spending time outside playing is a crucial part of growing up. Playgrounds allow kids to test their limits and create social bonds. Far too many urban schools lack play structures and children are left to play on asphalt or small garden areas, which simply isn't enough.
Community Schoolyards is all about tackling this issue. This project aims to repeat the successes of the JFK Elementary Community Schoolyard project in South Scranton throughout Lackawanna Valley schools. We guide children in designing their ideal playground, then walk through the budgeting and construction processes. This project gives students a look into the systems that drive our society and show show important it is to be engaged. Not to mention the leadership, communication and collaboration skills that come with activities like these.
These projects end with the construction of the very play ground students designed, for use by the whole community throughout the year. What better way to bring people together than by seeing neighborhood kids playing in a space designed by their peers?
