Soon after losing our beloved senior Boxer Lucky in early December 2021, we reached out to Adopt a Boxer Rescue (AABR) hoping to adopt a puppy. We did this as a tribute to Lucky - to give a rescue dog a great life- in Lucky’s memory.
We thogiht we wanted a puppy, but it was as if AABR knew what we needed more than we did !
That’s when AABR introduced us to Jason — a calm, gentle, older Boxer, abandoned in October 2021, at the Baltimore City Shelter when his former owners dumped him there, claiming he was 15 years old and requesting they just “euthanize him.”
The shelter vet, however, met Jason, saw the life still shining in him, determined Jason was really only 6 or 7 years old, and contacted AABR, who immediately placed him in a loving Maryland foster home!! And the rest, as they say, is history!
Jason moved in with us on December 23, 2021, and of course we were still grieving for Lucky. In fact. we continued to grieve. But at the exact same time, we were loving a boy who needed love - showing him that this was now HIS home TOO, and learning all his crazy quirks … just like we’d done with lucky a few years prior.
its as if Lucky knew what we needed and found him for us. We gave Jason an amazing first Christmas with us, and we haven’t turned back!
Now around 11 or 12 years old, Jason is slowing down just a little, but he remains the most loving, grateful dog we have ever known. And it’s as if Jason knows he won the lottery with us… as he enjoys just being together, loves every meal he gets, and he even gets a little crazy sometimes chasing his dog brother and sister - not even minding the fact that he can’t see very well anymore!
We still send photos and updates to his wonderful foster mom who saved our sweet boy’s life.
Jason adores sunshine while letting himself out the doggie door and laying on our deck, OBX beach trips, sleeping beside us, and celebrating birthdays like the one in this photo, during our OBX trip that year, where he happily wore his birthday glasses and soaked up every bit of attention.
He still has no interest in traditional dog toys — as he prefers cardboard boxes, paper plates, and empty toilet paper rolls, which makes us wonder if he spent a lot of time outside fishing thru the trash as a younger pup. But now he wags only the best “old man” dog food that helps his weakening muscles, along with some good beef that our vet said would help build up his back end during these elder years!
And he remains the most loving, grateful dog we have ever known.
Thanks to AABR, Jason’s world changed from uncertainty to one filled with love, comfort, safety, and endless spoiling. We truly treasure every single day we get to spend with him, and we pray we have many more. .
