The mission of The Waverly Community House is to enhance the lives of individuals and families in the region by fostering educational, recreational, and cultural opportunities.
More than a century ago, Margaretta E. Belin established the Waverly Community House—affectionately known as “the Comm”—as a living memorial to her husband, Henry Belin, Jr., following his passing in 1917. The cornerstone was laid on July 26, 1919, and by June 4, 1920, the building and a portion of the land were deeded to Abington Township for the use and benefit of all its residents. Just a few weeks later, on June 25, 1920, Pennsylvania Governor William Sproul formally dedicated the central portion of the building.
Since then, the Waverly Community House has stood as a cornerstone of educational, cultural, and recreational enrichment in Northeastern Pennsylvania. For over 100 years, we have proudly served the community through programs that include affordable childcare, cultural arts events, fitness and wellness classes, the Waverly Thrift Shop, a local post office, and our nationally recognized Destination Freedom Underground Railroad Walking Tour Program, listed on the National Park Service’s Network to Freedom.
This year, all funds raised through NEPA Gives will directly support educational, recreational, and cultural programming at the Comm. Your gift will help us continue to create programming and events shaped to engage our community.
