Trauma Doesn’t Live in the Event—It Lives in the Body and Mind

At Marley’s Mission, we understand that trauma is not defined solely by what happened, but by what happens inside a child as a result. Whether it stems from abuse, neglect, grief, chronic stress, or even the disruption and uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic, trauma can alter a child’s sense of safety, trust, and identity.

The impact of trauma is complex. It can manifest in anxiety, depression, withdrawal, aggression, and difficulties in school or relationships. It affects how a child thinks, feels, and connects to others, and without proper support, these wounds can follow them into adulthood.

That’s where Marley’s Mission steps in.

Located on a 63-acre farm in Newton Township, Marley’s Mission provides Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) at no cost to children ages 5 to 18 who have experienced trauma. Children come to us from 17 counties across Northeastern Pennsylvania, and each session is led by a licensed trauma therapist and a trained equine specialist working together through the internationally recognized EAGALA model.

This model does not involve horseback riding. Instead, all work with the horses happens on the ground, allowing children to process their experiences in a safe, nonverbal, and empowering way. Through the movement and presence of horses, children can begin to rebuild what trauma has taken: a sense of control, confidence, emotional regulation, and connection.
