Lacawac Sanctuary Foundation

At Lacawac Sanctuary, we believe every child deserves the opportunity to connect with nature and discover the wonder of science. Research shows students engaged in nature-based learning are three times more likely to find lessons meaningful and memorable.

Through hands-on, inquiry-driven programs for youth ages 5–18, Lacawac inspires curiosity, critical thinking, and environmental stewardship. Students explore forests, lakes, and wetlands while learning about ecology, conservation, and sustainability through real-world experiences.

What makes Lacawac unique is our commitment to place-based learning—students don’t just learn about nature, they learn within it. By seeing, hearing, and experiencing the natural world firsthand, they build lifelong connections to the environment and a deeper understanding of their role in protecting it.

Who We Are

The mission of the Lacawac Sanctuary Foundation is to preserve Lake Lacawac, its watershed, surrounding forests, and historic structures; support ecological research and scientific training; provide public and K–12 STEM education; and conserve open space throughout Pennsylvania.
