Sensory Aid Bags

Enhancing Safety. Improving Outcomes. Protecting Families.

For individuals with autism, high-stress environments such as traffic stops, medical emergencies, fire responses, and ER visits can trigger sensory overload. Sirens, flashing lights, multiple responders, physical contact, and rapid instructions may escalate anxiety quickly — increasing risk for miscommunication and unsafe interactions. CAM’s Sensory Aid Bags are designed to support safer, more effective engagement between first responders and individuals with autism. These kits provide immediate tools to de-escalate, improve communication, and reduce trauma during crisis response.

CAM has distributed in Luzerne County to: Fire Departments, EMS & Ambulance Services, Search & Rescue Teams, State Police, and Hospital Emergency Rooms. These partnerships strengthen field safety while promoting dignity and compassion.

Why This Program Matters

In high-stress emergency environments, dysregulation can lead to:

• Miscommunication
 • Escalation of behavior
 • Increased risk of injury
 • Delays in care
 • Greater strain on first responders

By equipping emergency teams with immediate sensory tools and communication supports, we help:

✔ Reduce behavioral escalation
 ✔ Improve compliance and cooperation
 ✔ Enhance safety
✔ Support faster, more effective care
✔ Protect both responders and families

What’s Inside Each Bag

Each kit is curated with responder-friendly tools:

  • Noise-canceling headphones (reduce auditory overload)
  • Weighted blanket (grounding & calming support)
  • Sunglasses (light sensitivity protection)
  • Non-verbal communication board (critical for field communication)
  • Visual timer (transition support)
  • Assorted regulation fidgets
  • Quick reference response guide for first responders

Investment & Impact

At approximately $100 per bag, equipping a single fire, EMS, police, or hospital unit requires funding for 5 Sensory Aid Bags ($500 per unit) to ensure readiness and accessibility.

$500 – Equip one location with 5 bags
$5,000 – Outfit multiple emergency response units (50 bags)
$10,000+ – Regional public safety initiative sponsor (100 bags)

This initiative bridges healthcare, public safety, and community inclusion in one practical solution. Partner with CAM to Strengthen Public Safety for Individuals with Autism.
