Pinegrove Historical Society-Stanhope Schoolhouse

As with any project, there continues to be maintenance and restoration work needed in order to preserve this piece of history for future generations. Our current needs include: sealing the foundation; adding gutters and stone around the building; building a replica of the outhouse; purchasing and installing 4 schoolhouse pendant lights; installing the school bell in the bell tower; locating and securing pull-down classroom maps circa 1924 - 1952; and continued research on students and teachers. Your donation of any size or becoming a volunteer is appreciated.       

The mission of the Pinegrove Historical Society is the discovery, collection, display, preservation, and publication of the archives and artifacts of the Pine Grove area, and to provide educational opportunities to the community. The Stanhope Schoolhouse Project began in August 2014 when the Society saved this one-room schoolhouse from demolition.

The goal was to restore the schoolhouse and bring it back to life. The Grand Re-Opening occurred in August 2022 with a vision to open the schoolhouse from May – September so the public can learn about education and life in the community between 1876 and 1952 through experiential activities and museum exhibits. Since then, three public educational programs, five opportunities to view the museum, and private programs have been scheduled each year.

     The 150th Anniversary of the schoolhouse is being celebrated in 2026 with the publication of Inspiring Generations.                                                                                                             

Stanhope is the only one-room school open to the public in Schuylkill County and is a partner with the Country School Association of America.
