The mission of the Luzerne County Historical Society (LCHS), founded in 1858, is to preserve and promote the collective history and heritage of Luzerne County, PA. As the oldest county historical society in Pennsylvania, it acts as the steward of local history by collecting, interpreting, and showcasing the region's diverse stories, traditions, and artifacts.

LCHS offers tours, events and educational opportunities to the community.  Our staff curate artifacts and showcase local history at our Historical Society Museum in downtown Wilkes Barre.

Staff and volunteers gather each year to present what it was like to live in the 1800's at the Swetland Homestead Christmas at Swetland and share the story of the family that lived there for generations.  The Nathan Denison House is located in Forty Fort and was built in 1790.  It still stands as it was back then with no electricity or running water.  Can you imagine?!

We encourage you to research history at our Bishop Library in Wilkes Barre. Maybe you're looking for history on your family or a famous person that lived in the area, we  would love to have you connect with our staff by making an appointment.

We thank you for your support helps us to maintain our buildings and operations and preserve the history and heritage of our county.
