Support Our Sheriff’s K-9 Hero - Luzerne County

The Luzerne County Sheriff’s Department is rebuilding its K-9 Division to better protect the people of Luzerne County.

Just over a year ago, our community had no immediate access to an explosives detection K-9. During bomb threats, we often waited more than two hours for assistance from outside agencies. With the addition of K-9 Hylee, that critical capability has been restored.

But our work is not finished.

Luzerne County still has no locally available Search and Rescue or Human Remains Detection K-9. When a vulnerable resident goes missing, whether an elderly person who has wandered away or a child with disabilities, every minute matters.

We are now working to add a Search and Rescue / Human Remains Detection K-9 to the Sheriff’s Department. A down payment has already been made, and we are moving forward with training and preparation. This K-9 will work alongside the Project Lifesaver program we are working on implementing. While Project Lifesaver technology can guide responders close to a missing person, a trained K-9 can help locate them within just a few feet, greatly increasing the chances of a safe and timely recovery.

We are seeking $7,500 in community support to help fund the K-9’s acquisition, specialized training, equipment, veterinary care, and ongoing supplies. The Sheriff’s Department has committed that long-term program costs will be supported through donations and grants, if possible.

K-9 Hylee already protects the courthouse, responds to threats, and represents the Sheriff’s Department at schools and community events, strengthening the bond between law enforcement and the community.
