Gaslight Theatre Company

A nonprofit organization

Gaslight Theatre Company was founded in August of 2003 when a group of ambitious Wilkes-Barre actors got together to produce William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The play was produced on a shoestring budget, but after a successful run, our group of actors-turned-producers decided to continue producing plays; and Gaslight was born!

Gaslight’s original mission was to bring high-quality productions of classical and under-produced plays to audiences in the Northeastern Pennsylvania area. In 2011, Gaslight produced its first original full length play by a local playwright and has since cemented original works into the mission and five core values that continually set Gaslight apart: collaboration, originality, respect, passion, and professionalism.

What makes Gaslight stand out?

In NEPA, there are more than 15 other theatre companies, but Gaslight is the only with this kind of mission.

  • Our programming goes beyond plays and musicals: we've workshop many original plays, hosted free play readings, and performed free performances of Shakespeare on the River with the Riverfront Parks Committee.
  • We've donated more than $5,000 of out ticket sales over the years to other nonprofits, including locally with the Peace and Justice Center and Children’s Service Center and nationally with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, UNICEF, Gilda’s Club and others.
  • We aim to give both audiences and artists the highest standard in productions and create an experience that is entertaining, educational, and thought-provoking — we're not just looking to sell tickets.
  • The core of our board, past and present, has worked in a professional artistic setting and brings with them an advanced understanding of how theatrical professionals collaborate and successfully mount and market production.
