ABOUT THE MUSEUM

As women, too often when we present our Military IDs, the assumption is that we’re dependents of military personnel. To which most often ask, “Where did your husband serve?” and our responses come as a shock when we say, “He didn’t; I served.”

Women have served in the military since 1775, but it was not until 1948—three years after World War II—that they were officially recognized as full, permanent members of every branch of the U.S. Armed Forces. President Harry S. Truman signed the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act, marking a turning point that opened the door for women to continue breaking barriers. Today, fewer than 2 million women serve in uniform, making up 20% of the U.S. military and 19% of the officer corps. Despite these contributions, women remain underrecognized in American military history and continue to fight for equitable veteran services and resources.

Women in the military continue to shape society in powerful and lasting ways. They have helped advance gender and racial equality within the armed forces, redefined leadership, and created new opportunities for future generations. The Women Veterans Museum is committed to honoring the women who have served, are serving, and will continue to overcome barriers and make a global impact. It is the first women veterans museum in Pennsylvania dedicated to representing all women, regardless of race, branch, or level of service.

We work to educate communities about the history of the U.S. Armed Forces, the vital contributions women veterans have made both on and off the battlefield, and the ways they continue to lead through loyalty, duty, and respect. The museum also provides transitional and mental health resources for women veterans as they move from military to civilian life. By sharing meaningful artifacts and creating an immersive museum experience, we hope to inform, honor, and inspire every visitor.

Founder Claudette Williams is a 30-year Army veteran and retired Sergeant Major who completed two tours overseas. Her firsthand experience, years of public service, commitment to community education, and passion for preserving legacy have helped create a unique and welcoming space where women veterans and their families feel seen, celebrated, and honored.

The museum is run by a dedicated volunteer team of veterans, military spouses, community members, and everyday heroes.
