St. Matthew’s Mission Statement: “Saint Matthew’s United Evangelical Lutheran Church lives our baptismal commitment to be God’s people in this congregation, community and in the world, by: Praising God, through public prayer, worship and sharing of the Word and Sacrament; Following Christ in Compassion and Service; and accepting the empowerment of the Holy Spirit to enjoy the peace and power of God’s love with all His creation.”

St. Matthew’s welcomes all to worship where Scripture is shared and sacraments are celebrated as a sign of God’s grace for us. St. Matthew’s supports Christian education for all ages, volunteers, lay leaders, and those seeking ordination in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). St. Matthew’s provides regular pastoral care and counseling opportunities at no cost to the community. St. Matthew’s celebrates partnerships with other congregations to support community organizations such as “Safety Net,” NEPA Youth Shelter, and local schools by collecting resources to share. The people of St. Matthew’s have volunteered for St. Francis of Assisi Soup Kitchen, sponsored a tree at Lackawanna County’s Festival of Trees, and regularly donate to other local charities. We are proud to be involved in our community. 

St. Matthew’s is also involved globally through our annual support of Lutheran World Relief – which has programs in several nations to encourage self-sufficiency and overcoming poverty; Lutheran Disaster Relief – which responds to famine, drought, hurricanes, tornadoes, wildfires and health crises domestically and abroad; and God’s Global Barnyard – which provides resources to international schools, healthcare institutions, and family farms to encourage growth and prosperity.

The gift of space makes a significant difference for us to live our commitment to serve our congregation, community and world. Our worship and fellowship spaces are regularly used for special services highlighting significant events in peoples’ lives including weddings, baptisms, and funerals. We host regional events, new worshipping communities, fundraising opportunities and several community groups including Alcoholics Anonymous, AlAnon, and Gamblers Anonymous. We support and host events including Trunk or Treat, Harvest Home dinners, and Strawberry socials. St. Matthew’s gives thanks for God’s gifts of space and community. We are blessed by your support.
